Class Descriptions
Classes are 50 minutes in length.
(Classes do not meet on Concert Day.)
Preparatory Music Theory I
[Thursdays 2 – 2:50 p.m.- Ms. Haney]
- (Previously called Elementary Music Theory)
- 3 – 7th graders
- For younger students interested in learning the basics of Music Theory: notation, rhythm, Italian terms, expressive markings, and more.
- Preparatory Music Theory I students have no previous knowledge or experience with music
- Students do not need to have any previous musical knowledge.
- A variety of music games are incorporated into the learning process as a fun way to learn and review the basics.
- The Instructor will utilize dry erase boards and a keyboard as teaching tools.
- Each student will need to purchase the required materials ($8-10).
- Older students are welcome if they learn better in a multi-sensory environment.
- Minimum of 6 students
Music Theory I
[Thursdays 3:30 – 4:20pm – Ms. Haney]
- 8 – 12th graders
- Geared for older students that can move at a quicker pace.
- Students may have little or no knowledge of the basics of Music Theory.
- Students will become proficient reading musical notation, rhythms, Italian terms, expressive markings, major scales, circle of 5ths, and more.
- Each student will need to purchase the required materials ($8-10)
- The instructor will utilize dry erase boards, a keyboard, and some games will be used as a means of reviewing material.
- Minimum of 6 students
Music Theory II:
[Thursdays 2 – 2:50 p.m. – Ms. Dib]
- 8 – 12th graders
- Geared for older students that have successfully completed Theory 1 and have instructor approval to move forward.
- More advanced material will be introduced: key signatures/circle of 5ths, major & minor scales, basic chord structure, intervals, dictation of basic rhythms and melodies
- The instructor will utilize dry erase boards and a keyboard. Games will occasionally be used as a means of reviewing material.
- Students that have taken music theory classes in the past and wish to take a refresher course may also sign up for Music Theory 2.
- Each student will need to purchase the required workbook.
- Minimum of 6 students
Advanced Music Theory
[Thursdays 3 – 3:50 p.m.- Ms. Dib]
- This class is intended for high school students who have completed Music Theory level 2 (or have completed equivalent courses elsewhere) and can read musical notation proficiently.
- This fast paced class will cover music theory concepts more in depth such as advanced rhythmic notation, key signatures, scales, intervals, chord structure, jazz music theory, and modes.
- Learn the vocabulary of music and recognize patterns to bridge the gap between reading music on the page and playing by ear.
- Sharpen your music reading skills by recognizing chords, scales, key signatures and patterns in printed sheet music.
- Students who wish to improvise using chord charts, jam with others and serve on worship teams will benefit from the weekly listening assignments and connecting theory concepts to their real instruments.
- The book Garage Band Theory by Duke Sharp will be utilized through the class and will serve as a practical reference for many years to come; Each student will need to purchase the required workbook.

Skills for Singing
[Tuesdays – Ms. Incorvati]
- Primary Skills for Singing (2:30 – 3:20 p.m.)
- Elementary Skills for Singing (3:30 – 4:20 p.m.)
- Secondary Skills for Singing (12 – 12:50 p.m.)
– Primary Skills for Singing (1st – 2nd grade) is designed to help prepare young students who enjoy singing for later choral experience in an age-appropriate setting. (minimum of 6 students)
– Elementary (3rd – 5th gr.) and Secondary (6th – 12th gr.) Skills for Singing classes are designed to complement the instruction students are receiving in their choir classes; as such, students must be co-enrolled in VOC choir in order to participate in these classes. (minimum of 6 students)
– All levels will include vocal technique, solfege exercises, ear training, rhythm reading, sight singing, and theory.
– All students will use the Full Voice workbook series; each student will need to purchase the required book.
